David Grissom said he has considered trying to become mayor of Russellville for a long time.
Grissom, a city councilman, said prayer and encouragement from friends and family led him to the point where he is ready to announce plans to seek the city’s top elected position in August.
“My family has always been active in politics, and running for mayor is something I’ve thought about for a long time,” said Grissom, who is finishing his first term as the council’s District 5 representative. “I grew up in Russellville, live in Russellville and this is a way I can give back to the community that means so much to me and my family.”
Grissom, a local businessman, is a 1990 graduate of Russellville High School and a 1994 graduate of University of North Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in business marketing.
He and his wife, Melissa, a teacher at Russellville High School, have one daughter, Kate.
“I feel I can help the city move forward and make it a better place for my daughter to grow up,” said Grissom, 39. “I hope to make her future as good or even better than I had growing up here.”
He said the announcement is coming early, but he wants to let people know his intentions.
“I’ve been seriously considering this for the past year, and I felt the time was right to let people know,” he said.
Grissom said working together as a team is critical in improving the city and moving it forward.
“If elected, I’m willing to work with whomever is on the council to do everything possible to make Russellville a better place to live and work,” he said.
Grissom is the first person to announce plans to seek an elected office in Russellville. The municipal election is Aug. 29.
